Μπορεί ο Jobs να μην είναι πια εδώ, μπορεί ο Ταλαντούχος Κύριος Musk να είναι η κορυφαία προσωπικότητα σήμερα, αλλά ευτυχώς υπάρχει και ο Sir Richard Branson. Που μας υπόσχεται πλέον και την επιστροφή των υπερηχητικών επιβατικών πτήσεων. Με την παρουσίαση του Boom. Ενός σκάφος πρωτότυπου που υπόσχεται πως θα κάνει σε 3.5 ώρες την απόσταση Λονδίνο-Νέα Υόρκη. Και όλα αυτά με την ‘προσιτή’ τιμή των $5,000 μετ’επιστροφής. Ο δισεκατομμυριούχος ιδρυτής του Virgin Group είπε πως η εταιρία του Spaceship, η startup του, θα βοηθήσει στην κατασκευή του Boom. Και έτσι μπορεί να έχουμε τον διάδοχο του Concorde.
“I have long been passionate about aerospace innovation and the development of high-speed commercial flights,” είπε ο Branson. “As an innovator in the space, Virgin Galactic’s decision to work with Boom was an easy one. We’re excited to have an option on Boom’s first 10 airframes. Through Virgin Galactic’s manufacturing arm, the Spaceship Company, we will provide engineering and manufacturing services, along with flight test support and operations as part of our shared ambitions.”
Θα συνεργαστεί δε με τον κο Blake Scholl, πιλότο και πρώην στέλεχος της Amazon executive. Αυτός θα αποκαλύψει και το σκάφος σε ένα υπόστεγο στο Denver του Colorado. Ανάμεσα στις εταιρίες που είναι στην κούρσα για ένα τέτοιο σκάφος, οι Boeing και Lockheed Martin εξελίσσουν supersonic jets, αλλά ο κ. Scholl είπε πως θα είναι πρώτος στην κούρσα και μάλιστα χωρίς ‘εξωτικές’ νέες τεχνολογίες.
Ο Scholl είπε πως οι πτήσεις θα ξεκινήσουν στην California με πρώτες πτήσεις το 2023. Οι πτήσεις του Boom αν πάνε όλα καλά θα γίνουν 20 χρόνια μετά την απόσυρση των British Airways και Air France Concorde.
“Sixty years after the dawn of the jet age, we’re still flying at 1960s speeds,” λέει ο Scholl, CEO της Boom. “Concorde’s designers didn’t have the technology for affordable supersonic travel, but now we do. Today, we’re proud to unveil our first aircraft as we look forward to our first flight late next year.”
O Scholl λέει δε πως τα εισητίρια θα κοστίζουν “about the same as tickets in business class”. “I don’t know a single person who wouldn’t want to get there in half the time, rather than have some free champagne,”. “It won’t be a bucket-list purchase any more. There is a huge market and the margins are enormous.”
Το Boom θα έχει 45 με 50 θέσεις σε σχέση με το Concorde που είχε 92 έως 128. Όπως είπε ο Scholl: “I started this because I was sad that I never got to fly on Concorde. I waited but no one was doing it, so I decided to. Ultimately I want people to be able to get anywhere in the world in five hours for $100. To get there you have to improve fuel efficiency, but step-by-step supersonic air travel will become available for everyone. This is supersonic passenger air travel, no bullshit, and it’s actually affordable.”
