Ένας μηχανικός της Googleμ ένας software engineer για την ακρίβεια, τα παράτησε όλα και άρχισε να δουλεύει σε μια φάρμα. Μια φάρμα όμως διαφορετική. Αυτή η φάρμα που μοιάζει να έρχεται από το μέλλον έρχεται από το San Carlos της Καλιφόρνια. Μόλις 20 μίλια μακριά από το San Francisco και όχι για τον πλανήτη Άρη. Για εδώ. Ονομάζεται Called Iron Ox και έχει σαν στόχο να παράγει πρασινάδα, 26,000 κεφάλια τον χρόνο. Αλλά λειτουργεί μόνο με τη βοήθεια ρομπότ. Ναι. Δηλαδή; Δηλαδή…
…δεν μας χρειάζεται
“This is a fundamentally different way of approaching farming,” λέει ο CEO και συνιδρυτής κ.Brandon Alexander που στα 33 μίλησε στο Digital Trends. “Traditionally, the farming process means that you seed, you wait a few months, you come back, you harvest, and you distribute. That hasn’t changed a whole lot in hundreds, if not thousands, of years.”
Η φάρμα έχει έκταση 8,000 τετραγωνικά πόδοα και είναι μια φάρμα με τεχνολογία hydroponics που σημαίνει πως δεν χρειάζεται χώμα. Και είναι κάθετη άρα δεν χρειάζεται μεγάλο χώρο.
Αντί για γεωργό δε στην Iron Ox δουλεύει ένα ρομπότ με βάρος 1,000 λίβρες, το Angus. “We’ve taken a robotics-first approach to the growing,” λέει ο κ.Alexander.“Everything is designed with that in mind.”
Ο δε νεαρός μικρός δούλευε στην Oklahoma σε φάρμα με τους δικούς του και δεν φαντάζονταν πως χρόνια μετά με τον συνιδρυτή του και CTO Jonathan Binney, 34 ετών, θα έφτιαχναν το Iron Ox. Ο δε παππούς του στα 83 και γεωργός ακόμη, μάλλον θα είναι περήφανος…
“[My grandad is] technophobic; he doesn’t know how to use an iPhone [or about machine learning or computer vision],” λέει ο κ.Alexander. “But when I explained what I was doing, he said, ‘This is inevitable.’ That kind of surprised me, but it shouldn’t. When he was a kid, and his dad was farming, they managed 40 acres. Now him and his crew are managing 6,000 acres. He’s seen the progression.”
Η ώρα της Just-in-time γεωργίας έρχεται. Και χωρίς να είναι σέξι για τα δεδομένα της Silicon Valley μπορεί να ξεκινήσει και έτσι.
Την τεχνολογία είχε αρχικά αναπτύξει η Toyota για την Ιαπωνία στα 1960s και τα 70s αλλά σίγουρα οι Ιάπωνες είχαν στο νου τα οχήματα. Τώρα με τη βοήθεια του υπολογιστή με την ονομασία “The Brain.” Ναι, είναι ένας cloud-based, A.I. υπολογιστής πίσω από τα ολόφρεσκα ραπανάκια…
Σήμερα το Iron Ox έχει αρχίσει να δέχεται παραγγελίες αλλά εκτιμάται πως θα είναι σε πλήρη παραγωγή μέχρι τα τέλη του έτους.
“We had some pretty good, cushy jobs at Google and whatnot,” είπε ο κ.Alexander. “We wanted to make sure that, when we took the next step, it was something we were passionate about. It’s not about staying passionate for one year; it’s about whether or not this was something we could put decades of our life into? That’s a different metric, for sure.”
“Agriculture is one of the few industries right now where they can’t get enough help. That was something that surprised Jon and myself when we first started. When we quit our jobs, we spent four months roadtripping California, talking to farmers. We talked to dozens of outdoor and indoor farmers. One of the questions we asked was ‘what’s your biggest pain point?’ 100 percent of them said that it was labor scarcity. They could not get enough help for their farms.”
Η μέση ηλικία του αγρότη στις ΗΠΑ βρήκαν πως είναι τα 58. “It’s a bell curve distribution, and it keeps shifting over to older and older. There simply aren’t enough people wanting to do this. And I don’t blame them. It’s hard, back-breaking work. It’s just where it’s going.”
Το 1820 ο μισός πληθυσμός των ΗΠΑ ζούσε στην ύπαιθρο και ασχολούνταν με τη γεωργία, σήμερα είναι το 2%. Η ώρα για κάτι σαν το Iron Ox έχει ήδη έρθει. Και τώρα δεν θα χρειάζεται οι πληθυσμοί να μετακινηθούν από τις πόλεις. Η γεωργία έρχεται δίπλα τους.
